Let's Talk About Web 3

I have a confession. Web3 has been my guilty pleasure for the last couple of months. I've spent hours going down the internet rabbit holes of what it is and what it can mean for the future of applications and the identity industry. So I figured, why not share in all the fun! So I've curated some different articles and websites around this fascinating topic.

Here are my two cents on the subject. Web3 is the next revision of how we build and interact on the internet. It's the closes thing I think I'll see in my lifetime to a complete rebuild of the internet. It rethinks security and privacy and puts it truly at the center of the architecture. Identity and control of attributes is put in the hands of users. Users bring their identity and decide which attributes to share; authentication is done without our beloved password. Applications are decentralized and spread across nodes. Storage, compute, all distributed. The community can be rewarded for contributing and building, enabling a truly user-driven application. I know, I know this all sounds Utopia-ish and some aspects of it are I'll admit. But, it's catching fire, and I for one am excited to see if this fire will grow. So below I've linked to some great resources to help you navigate this Web3 hole.

What is Web 3

How to start building Web3 Apps..or dApps

It's not all roses and unicorns

As much as I love the potential of what Web3 can be, we are still early days. The learning curve is still high, and adoption is slow. There are still questions about the security of users' information. We have much to do.

Where does identity fit in Web3?

In the Web 3.0 world, identity will matter like never before. Gone are the fun email addresses and multiple pseudonyms of the Web 2.0 Era. We are transitioning into a world built upon cryptography, with an unprecedented level of inherent privacy. And in this world, owning your identity is the key to accessing the several benefits of Web 3.0. This article discusses how IAM is going to work hand in hand with Web 3.0 to transform the world.

How does security work in Web 3?

Proponents of Web 3.0 claim that it will be far more secure than Web 2.0 because users will have more control over their data and identity online. This is simply because the foundation for Web 3.0 is blockchain technology, which will ensure all users have the privacy protections and benefits of a blockchain decentralized network. Regardless, threats against data security will not be eliminated, and organizations need to adopt necessary measures such as those prescribed in this article.

The problem with giving identity to the people is that we must trust those people to protect them. One of the issues with identity, and real security, in general, is that we've never made it user-friendly. We can't expect everyday users to understand cryptography and blockchain, so what tools will we create to improve security?

Last Word

Annnd that's a wrap on this first Special Edition of the Identity Jedi Newsletter! I don't call myself a Web3 expert ( yet) , but I enjoy learning more about it, and hopefully, you do too. I encourage you to dive in and find aspects of this brave new world that you can learn about and hopefully contribute to. We've wanted to redo a lot of the wrongs in internet security for a while now. I can't tell you how many conversations I've had that started with " if we could do it all over again". Well Web3 might be the closest we get. It's far from perfect, but nothing in life is.

Until next week Jedi.
